They say that fortune favors the brave. If the guts Marion showed today in beating Anna Chakvetadze is anything to go by, then the saying rings true. The second win in two weeks for Marion over the world number 8.

This mammoth match lasting over 3 hours, started quite auspiciously for Marion, as she surged into a 3-0 lead. However with Marion serving first it was only a single break of the Chakvetadze serve.


Chakvetadze was able to cancel out her nervy double faults and second serves by presenting a posse of Aces. Gradually she fought her way back into the set for 4-4. Games where long duration.


Anna knowing that a break and a hold would secure her the set, promptly obliged. Serving her fifth ace for the first set 6-4.


2nd Set


The opening games of the 2nd set proceeded with serve. 

Marion bravely overcame momentary serving frailties to win the fifth game for 3-2. A game which read like a takeaway menu: Two double faults, four second serves, and five deuce points!


It may have looked to some that Marion's efforts in the fifth game where in vain as swiftly she was broken to 15. Giving Chakvetadze a 5-4 lead at a critical stage in the match.


With Chakvetadze serving for the match, Marion had no option than to break back immediately to avoid exiting the tournament. What happened next is the stuff of tennis lore.


Marion went up 15-40 on her opponents serve, earning her two break back points But then Chakvetadze bagan to cap Marion's well of hope, as the Russian reached matchpoint.


Marion saved  the matchpoint. 

The rain came. 

The match was suspended.


After an interval of around half an hour the match resumed. Marion broke Chakvatadze, and courageously held her next service game after six deuces. The well of hope was once again overflowing. 


Marion broke once again to take the 2nd set 7-5, and snatch the match from the jaws of defeat.

3rd Set


The third set went with serve until Marion broke in the critical eighth game, for a 5-3 lead.


With only a hold of serve standing between Marion and the quarter finals of the Rogers Cup, she took the opportunity to serve her first Ace of the match at 30-15. But despite earning her first matchpoint, a few nervy second serves allowed Chakvetadze to break back, and then hold, for 5-5 in this final set.


A hold from break point down, and it was 6-5 Miss. Bartoli.


Marion then had another three matchpoints, but didnt convert.


6-6.


A match which was scheduled to start at 2 in the afternoon local time, was now nearing closure approaching 7pm in showery Montreal, with a deciding set tie break.


Even the tie break wound it's way round a heart-stopping hairpin 3-3.. agonising, 4-4.. incredible.. And with the magic number seven approaching Marion dashed her opponents serve, and dashed for the winning line.


Victory. 4-6 7-5 7-6 (4)


Earlier this week Marion said, "I'm a tough girl, I can go far." Today she showed this, as if anyone needed convinving!

Aye Ai

On Friday afternoon around 2pm local time, Marion is back on court again to play Ai Sugiyama for a place in the semi final. Marion defeated Ai two weeks ago exactly.


Well done Marion. You're a big strong girl!! :. And still wearing that rather splendid outfit.. Airdrie?
