Its irritating that whenever Marion beats a big player, the media perspective is always on how bad the other player played, rather than how good Marion played. But then admitting Marion is a good albeit unorthodox player, just doesnt enter into tennis-expert theology.

I know i've said all this a hundred times. I shall go to the grave saying it until the penny drops.

Instead of celebrating Marion's achievement, all i'm finding this morning is miopia in the American media. Whats new...

Its totally disingenuous to ascribe Davenport's loss to a dodgy service game at 5-5, or even to portray that admittedly bad game as somehow emblematic of what happened over there lastnight as a whole.

The untold story is an excellent Marion performance. That's what really happened lastnight.

Consider, even if Lindsay had been serving great, she probably would have lost, if not in two, then in three. Marion won 80 percent of points when her first serve was in, compared to Davenport's 61 percent, factor into this Marion having 8 percent more first serves than Davenport, then im no tennis expert thankfully,.. but I can count ,and i'd say thats pretty persuasive maths. Add to this the fact that Marion was far superior at the net, then al the ace-happy Davenport brutalism in the world still wouldnt have bailed her out lastnight.

Instead of hounding Lindsay to death, picking over the carcass of American tennis, the press pack ought to go find Marion and give her credit where its due. It's long overdue.

Pay up..

Below are the few after match comments from Marion available as of 9 AM UK time. Comments sourced from French media at that..

"If Lindsay is not going to give me the match, so I have to take it from her. If it takes three sets, it takes three sets. Up 6-1 and 5 -3, I really played well, after I got a little crispee (?). I think Davenport was surprised by my level of play I was in better shape. I think I played even better than when I was a finalist at Wimbledon last year. If I continue like this, I have bright prospects in this tournament and for the end of the season. It was a long time that I was looking to regain my level. I think Ive found it, perhaps even a little better than before."

This photo is like Urizen or something, from a William Blake image.

Our powerful Marion to be proud of. She's did it again.
