As you may recall, there was some speculation whether or not Marion would request a wildcard for Birmingham, following a 2nd round exit at the French Open.

I understand that Marion did indeed seek a wildcard, but her request was declined.

Marion even contacted former Wimbledon champion Virginia Wade personally to see if she could help, but to no avail.

Virginia Wade now does commentary work for broadcasters such as the BBC and Eurosport, and has spoken well of Marion's game whenever she has been commentating on one of her matches.

Earlier this year, Marion caused quite a stir among the tennis fraternity by choosing to play the qualifying event at Ponte Vedra Beach. On that occcasion also, the French number 1 initially approached tournament officials looking for a wildcard into the main draw, but was turned down. Instead tournament officials offered Marion a wild card into the qualifying draw. Consequently Marion won all three qualifying matches to reach the main draw of the small Florida tournament.
