With Clijsters already safely in the locker room for the loss of just two games, it was important that Marion respond positively in her opening match of this year's US Open. She did not disappoint.
It wasn't that Marion's first round opponent was highly likely to pose a mortal threat to her hopes of progressing - in two previous meetings she hadn't dropped a set against the Paraguayan - but even top players can be rusty in the first round, and sometimes it can get a bit messy out there.
One look at the final result and it may surprise you to learn that it wasn't until the fourth game of the match that either player held their serve today. But in the end, Marion had just too much of everything for the error-prone tour veteran, who nevertheless remained pretty cool in her sunglasses and cap regardless of the scoreline.
French number 1 and 2007 Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli will play 2005 US Open Champion and former world number 1 Kim Clijsters in the next round. This is a good start by Marion to a great tournament!

Tranlatated Portions From L'Equipe Write Up (Sophie Dorgan in New York) "I served pretty well, that's fine, But sure It demands that I play better against Clijsters. Overall, I am satisfied for the first round." said Marion.
Concerning her retirement from New Haven last week, Marion explained she had a muscle spasm and continued, "I'm rested and my batteries are recharged, because I chained a lot of tournaments. Physically, I feel 100% ready."
Looking forward to the match against Clijsters, Marion explains that's It's a big challenge for a 2nd round, "But it is a challenge that excites me."
